2025 Jeep Cherokee car combines utility, comfort, and off-road capability in a way that few other SUVs can. It’s comfortable and roomy enough to be a great everyday driving companion, but it’s also tough enough and capable of getting you in and out of rough terrain.

That alone makes the Grand Cherokee unique, but the car has three engine choices, including a 4xe plug-in hybrid. There’s also a Grand Cherokee L with three more spacious seats.

The 2025 Jeep Cherokee lineup currently offers nine models, most of which have four-wheel drive and up to three rows of seating. You can have any Grand Cherokee, from the most basic passenger carrier in Laredo A form to the most luxurious and feature-packed Summit Reserve.

Jeep hasn’t shown much affection for the Cherokee. The outgoing fifth-generation Cherokee was introduced in 2014, resulting in declining sales. A new model, possibly with a more politically correct name, would follow the design approach of the Grand Cherokee L but in a smaller form factor. It would maintain the off-road performance that has defined its reputation for nearly five decades, making it a pioneer of the SUV type, particularly the four-door SUV.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee helped create the contemporary SUV in the 1990s and is a prominent player in today’s highly competitive industry. The current generation model was debuted for 2022 and will most likely be refreshed in 2025.

Jeep offers the current Grand Cherokee with a regular wheelbase and five seats, the three-row long-wheelbase Grand Cherokee L, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid (both reviewed separately). Other mid-size SUVs with off-road capabilities are the Subaru Outback and Toyota 4Runner.

Few SUVs match the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s utility, comfort, and off-road capability. It’s comfortable and spacious enough to be a great everyday companion while being rugged and capable of getting you in and out of challenging terrain. That alone makes the Grand Cherokee stand out, but it also comes with three engine options, including the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the Grand Cherokee L with three rows.

The Grand Cherokee offers a wide range of options. The current portfolio includes nine (yes, nine) models, most of which are available with four-wheel drive and up to three rows of seats. That means you can customize your Grand Cherokee any way you want, from the most essential people mover, the Laredo A, to the most luxurious and feature-rich Summit Reserve.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Full-Size SUV Review

Because of the Grand Cherokee’s unique positioning of luxury and off-road capability, it’s hard to identify direct competitors. Those who don’t need the same space as the Grand Cherokee may prefer the Ford and Bronco. Both are capable and affordable, and what it lacks in luxury, it makes up for with personality.

Another option is the recently introduced Lexus GX. It costs slightly more than the Jeep but is more luxurious and is built on the Land Cruiser, which is renowned for off-road performance.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Updates

The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers exceptional off-road prowess, a pleasant on-road driving experience, and an elegant cabin. The midsize SUV was recently revised for 2022 and is slated for a revision.

To begin, its aged V-6 engine requires greater power and efficiency. We’ve criticized the Grand Cherokee’s brakes for their lack of sharpness and smoothness, and its basic driver-aid technology falls short of that of competitors.

The 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to undergo a considerable facelift, including exterior design tweaks and new inside accents. Redesigned lighting accents should match the new front and rear fascia designs. Inside the cabin, Jeep might incorporate a larger conventional infotainment screen. Additionally, Jeep may provide more active safety systems.

The Jeep Cherokee helped popularize SUVs, so its absence stands out. Besides being an iconic nameplate, the brand routinely sells more than 200,000 units annually in the United States.

Although sales have plummeted recently, the Cherokee is poised to come back. Car & Driver reports the model is coming “soon” after Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed plans for a new D-segment SUV. Filosa didn’t name the Cherokee, but the executive said you can “probably guess what it will be called.”

Not much else is known about the model, but The Drive reports that it won’t be an electric car initially. Filosa also reportedly confirmed multiple powertrains, saying, “We will have multiple options.” These are slated to include both conventional and hybrid offerings.

The redesigned Cherokee will go into production in the second half of 2025 and cost under $40,000. The price is still a mystery, but the 2023 Cherokee starts at $37,695. However, before Jeep goes wild on pricing, the 2021 model can be had for $28,135.

The price hike may partly explain Cherokee sales’ slump in recent years. In 2021, the company sold 89,126 Cherokee cars, but that number dropped to 40,322 the following year and totaled only 24,610 in 2023.

As a refresher, Jeep announced plans to retire the Belvidere assembly plant that produces the Cherokee by the end of 2022. At the time, Stellantis said this was a “difficult but necessary action” as “our industry has been adversely impacted by many factors such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the global microchip shortage.” However, the automaker noted, “the most impactful challenge is the rising costs related to the electrification of the automotive market.”

The final piece of speculation is that Jeep will introduce one or both variants of its Hurricane Twin Turbo engines, which we’ve lauded for their smoothness and power delivery in other cars in the company’s portfolio. This decision would go a long way toward revitalizing the Grand Cherokee and keeping Jeep competitive until it expands its inventory with other electric vehicles. Until that electric future becomes a reality, the Grand Cherokee will remain a strong competitor in the midsize SUV sector.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Redesign

The iconic Cherokee model has evolved from a full-size SUV variant of the Jeep Wagoneer to one of the first compact SUVs on the market, and then finally transformed into a popular style as a crossover SUV.

As it turns out, while the Jeep Wagoneer alumnus’ transition to a compact off-road sport utility vehicle was a successful one across the XJ, KJ, and KK generations, the final move to the fifth-generation KL as a crossover spelled the demise of the series.

While we know that Jeep’s online portal still lists the 2023 Cherokee in pricey Altitude Lux and Trailhawk trims ($37,695 and $41,295 respectively) – that’s just the remaining inventory.

In contrast, the model slotted between the Compass and the Grand Cherokee, introduced in 2013 at the New York International Auto Show, has a convoluted story. Its original appearance had a unique split headlight style that is fashionable nowadays, thanks to BMW or Hyundai.

YouTube Channel AutoYa has done a 2025 Jeep Cherokee Redesign. It has unofficially envisioned a CGI look of the yet-to-be-announced 2025 Jeep Cherokee (KM) based on comments by Jim Morrison, Jeep’s North American boss, who allegedly said the next Cherokee will be “bigger and better from the previous.”

The channel’s pixel experts have also added ‘bolder’ to the CGI mix, and the resulting design project feels slightly inspired by the Wagoneer S, not just the latest ICE-powered Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer.

Of course, as is tradition, CGI experts are working hard to deliver the hypothetical next iteration of the Jeep Cherokee in as many fancy colors as possible. They also offer us a glimpse of the inside with more shades, even a two-tone one, plus a look back at their old renderings after a quick comparison between the real Jeep and the new generation of CGI.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Specs

Gilles, the group-level design boss, praised the STLA Large platform for its excellent design features, such as the low battery placement and the EDM motors at the edges, which allow for various wheel sizes, suspension heights, and widths. The platform is suitable for mid-size to full-size vehicles with a length of 4.70-5.40 m and a width of 1.90-2.03 m.

Stellantis recently referred to STLA Large as a platform that prioritizes battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Still, a report from MoparInsiders.com suggests that the upcoming Jeep Cherokee (codenamed Jeep KM) will be available in hybrid and pure-electric versions.

Although Stellantis has not explicitly stated it, the STLA Large platform is not a dedicated EV platform like Volkswagen Group’s MEB. Instead, it appears to be an EV-first platform, superior to conversion-type models but not as efficient in space, cost, or features as bespoke platforms. The Jeep Cherokee Electric is expected to come with dual motors that enable an all-wheel drive drivetrain layout and offer multiple power levels of up to 350-400 hp.

The Cherokee EV’s battery pack is expected to have a gross energy storage capacity of 101-118 kWh, with a usable storage capacity slightly lower. With an 800-volt operating voltage, the battery pack may take only about 20 minutes for a 10-80% DC fast-charging session. Stellantis aims for a WLTP range of 500 miles for EVs based on the STLA Large platform.

However, being a large SUV, the Jeep Cherokee Electric may settle for a lower range of 350-400 miles. The EPA-estimated range could be slightly above 300 miles, which is still decent. Given that it is a Jeep SUV, the high-spec variants of the Jeep Cherokee Electric are anticipated to have impressive off-road capabilities.

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is a mid-size SUV, an expanded three-row version of the long-running Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee L is at the top of the product lineup despite being smaller than the recently revived Jeep Wagoneer.

With seating for up to seven people, the Grand Cherokee L has more space and utility than the standard Grand Cherokee while offering all the same capabilities and features. Changes for 2024 are few, although standard four-wheel drive on the Overland trim is a welcome upgrade. Therefore, we expect very significant changes to the latest model in 2025.

Reese Counts and Ryan ZumMallen at Edmunds reported that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the most iconic brands on the road. The original ZJ generation debuted in the early 1990s. Currently in its fifth generation, the Grand Cherokee has spawned a nearly identical yet slightly longer three-row variant, the Grand Cherokee L.

Mechanically, the two are identical, offering the same V6 and V8 powertrains, trim levels, and off-road capabilities. – running ability. The L is longer but not more comprehensive than the standard Grand Cherokee, which means it is still slightly smaller than the full-size Jeep Wagoneer. Despite this, the Grand Cherokee L is much cheaper and offers better fuel economy than the large Wagoneer.

Almost every automaker offers a three-row SUV in some form, so the Grand Cherokee L has plenty of stiff competition. The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade twins (these two models share the same platform and powertrain) have been among the highest-rated vehicles since their debut. If you don’t need the Jeep’s off-road capabilities or available V8 power, we think it’s worth considering some of its competitors.

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE

In its review, we go into more detail on the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. Still, the plug-in hybrid SUV has a more efficient drivetrain than the gasoline-only model’s naturally aspirated “star” “V-6. This variant features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, a motor generator, an electric motor incorporated into the gearbox, a 17.3-kWh battery, and an all-wheel drive.

The total system output is 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The driving range is 470 miles, and the battery pack can be recharged in less than three hours using a Level 2 charger. Level 1 charging completes that task in 12 hours. An improved variant is slated to debut alongside the 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee facelift.

2025 Jeep Trackhawk

As far as we know, the next-generation Jeep Trackhawk and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will use a supercharged V8 engine, and an inline-six hybrid may also be present to complete the latest Trackhawk model lineup. This suggests that the second-generation Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV powered by a supercharged V8 engine has been dropped from plans due to stricter emissions regulations and parent company SStellantis’ push towards hybrid and electric vehicles, with online publications such as Drive Australia and MoparInsider also mentioning this—the same one.

The outgoing “K2”Generationckhawk model powered by a 6.2-liter 522kW/868Nm supercharged V8 petrol engine will end production later this year to make way for the new “L”mModelead of the supercharged engine’s demise across the global Stellantis range by 2024.

Additionally, MoparInsiders reports that the upcoming turbocharged inline-six, first shown in patent images in 2019, could be used in a new SRT-badged version of the Grand Cherokee or Trackhawk aided by “Booster”electric turbocharging technology and a plug-in hybrid system.

Jeep is targeting engine output of up to 392kW if equipped with e-Booster technology alone, surpassing the 344kW/624Nm produced by the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 6.4-liter V8. Similarly, the addition of multiple electric motors as part of an extended hybrid system could close the gap with the Trackhawk, with a reasonable output estimate of over 550kW to offset the added weight of the battery and electric motor.

The good news comes with the launch of the two-row Grand Cherokee in plug-in hybrid form last week. Jeep confirmed plans to offer electric versions of every model by 2025, from the city-sized Renegade (and a rumored new model below it) to the full-size Wagoneer not provided in Australia.

Some 70 percent of global Jeep sales in 2025 are expected to be hybrid or electric, meaning high-performance Jeeps will likely be produced in the coming years to meet that sales mix.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

The Jeep Cherokee is available in two trims, the Altitude Lux and the Trailhawk, and is equipped with all-wheel drive. Two engine options are available: a 2.4L 4-cylinder producing 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque and a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 270 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. All engines have stop/start technology and a 9-speed transmission.

The Cherokee comes standard with various safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, full-speed forward collision warning with active braking, LaneSense lane-keeping assist, anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, hill-start control, and ten airbags.

The 4×4 models also get the Select-Terrain traction management system to navigate different road conditions. Optional safety features include a park assist and a roadside assistance button.

The Altitude Lux trim comes with 17-inch black aluminum wheels, power and heated exterior mirrors, automatic LED headlamps and taillamps, heated front seats, an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 4 USB ports, six speakers, an active grille shutters, roof rails, a power driver seat, and a rearview camera.

The 2025 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk trim has similar features to the Altitude Lux but excludes leather seats. It has added off-road capabilities with a driver-selectable locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, five skid plates, and a one-inch lift in the suspension.

The Trailhawk also includes black bumpers, two tow hooks in the front and one in the rear, an increased towing capacity of 4260 lbs., and a taller ground clearance.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Exterior

The 2025 Cherokee’s exterior has been completely redesigned, giving it a more aggressive and modern look. The grille has been enlarged, and the headlights have been reshaped to give the vehicle a more menacing appearance.

The taillights have also been updated with a new design that gives the Cherokee a more distinctive look from the rear.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Interior

While the Grand Cherokee doesn’t have the largest cabin in its class, it still has plenty of space. The reclining second row can comfortably accommodate people up to 6 feet tall. Unfortunately, this Grand Cherokee drives high, so getting in requires a significant step.

We also noticed limited forward visibility in some cases due to the Grand CCherokee’s wide front pillars and side mirrors. Use the surround-view camera system to help take most of the guesswork out of parking.

Most of the controls are easy to operate, but some of the knobs are small, and others are positioned at odd angles. Additionally, certain sunlight angles may completely hide labels on some touch-sensitive devices.

The Grand Cherokee has plenty of space even though it hasn’t the largest cabin in its class. The reclining second-row comfortably accommodates passengers up to 6 feet tall. Unfortunately, the Grand Cherokee is tall, and you must step higher to enter.

In some cases, we also noted poor forward visibility due to the Grand Cherokee’s large front pillars and side mirrors. Get a surround-view camera system to help take much of the guesswork out of parking.

2025 Grand Cherokee Technology

In 2024, Jeep will equip the Grand Cherokee with an 8.4-inch infotainment display, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other standard features include a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth connectivity for two phones, six speakers, and LED interior illumination. All models receive over-the-air updates. We wouldn’t be surprised if Jeep incorporated a larger center display when the 2025 Grand Cherokee debuted.

Higher trim levels include additional desirable features. The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited has a power liftgate, remote engine start, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a motorized front passenger seat.

The Overland trim level includes a hands-free liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, ventilated front seats, and a 10-speaker Alpine sound system. Jeep upgrades the Grand Cherokee Summit with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, massaging seats, a 10.3-inch display on the passenger side, dual 10.1-inch screens in the second row, and a McIntosh 20-speaker premium audio system.

The Grand Cherokee has Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The graphics are sharp, and the integrated navigation system provides helpful turn-by-turn directions.

However, we noticed that the upward-facing corner of the screen can sometimes catch glare from direct sunlight. Our test vehicle had a McIntosh surround sound system with 19 speakers, and we enjoyed its rich, distortion-free sound.

Smartphone integration is standard, and the Grand Cherokee has many USB ports. We also like the breadth and functionality of the Grand Cherokee’s suite of advanced Driver aids. For example, the adaptive cruise control brakes and accelerates smoothly, and the lane-keeping system works well without making too many sharp corrections.

2025 Grand Cherokee Storage

The Grand Cherokee has 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats, which is average for a midsize SUV. (The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offers 40.3 cubes, for example.)

The rear seats can also be split and folded flat to accommodate large items. The high loading height may be the only hurdle for some people.

Storage for smaller items is ample, with plenty of places to put glasses and ample center console storage in the first and second rows. The car seat space in the back is quite spacious. Two anchors on the outer seats are easily accessible beneath classy leather covers.

The Grand Cherokee offers above-average towing capabilities, with a maximum capacity of 6,200 pounds.

Comfort

This is the most prominent category for the Grand Cherokee. The front seats are very comfortable, even on long journeys. The available air suspension helps create a comfortable ride that absorbs road shocks without feeling too soft and bouncy.

Our Grand Cherokee was equipped with available four-zone climate control. This control is quite good at maintaining the set target temperature, but even with the fan at max speed, it blows less air than we’d like.

One area lacking from the Grand Cherokee is the road noise on the highway, which is too much for a high-end SUV.

2025 Grand Cherokee L Interior

There is loads of space inside the Grand Cherokee L. Drivers of all sizes should fit in the front, and there’s comfortable space for passengers up to 6 feet tall in both the second and third rows. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a hike to get inside due to the vehicle stall ride height, though a helpful tilt-and-slide second row allows for easy access to the third-row seating.

Two big red flags occur upfront. First, the controls are swathed in glossy piano black plastic. It quickly shows grease smudges and feels more like economy car equipment to the touch.

Second, dials are small and hard to grab, while buttons are positioned at strange angles or blocked completely by other controls, which makes the operation a frustrating experience. We also noted poor forward visibility because of the JJeep’s Protruding hood, large pillars, and mass of cameras and radar equipment that take up available windshield space.

2025 Grand Cherokee L Comfort

Comfort is a strong suit of the Grand Cherokee L. Its long wheelbase and optional air suspension create a cushy ride, and bumps in the road are absorbed before they reach passengers inside. It does this without feeling floaty or losing its composure. The leather seats in our Summit test vehicle also proved impressive, with an available massage function in the front row and pleasing comfort in the second and third rows.

However, this big SUV can keep noise out of the cabin the way it does with bumps in the road. We noticed more wind noise at highway speeds than we expected from this class, and the V6 engine was loud and sounded unpleasant when pushed.

2025 Grand Cherokee L Technology

The Grand Cherokee L is available with Uconnect 5, the latest infotainment system from parent company Stellantis. It has crisp graphics, and the integrated navigation system provides helpful turn-by-turn route instructions. Unfortunately, the screen is angled upward and easily reflects glare from direct sunlight. Our test vehicle had the optional 19-speaker McIntosh surround-sound system, but we were left underwhelmed, especially considering the system.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes standard, though our test vehicle dropped a call while using CarPlay, and the system disconnected two other times without warning. That doesn’t often happen in different cars with the same technology. We do like the Grand Cherokee’s advanced Driver aids. The adaptive cruise control brakes and accelerates smoothly, for instance, and the lane-keeping system works great to keep this big SUV where it should be.

2025 Grand Cherokee L Storage

The Grand Cherokee L trails some three-row rivals, such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas, in maximum cargo capacity. Its 17.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row is usable enough for everyday tasks, but the load floor is relatively high. Storage for small items is ample, with plenty of cupholders and spacious center console bins in the first and second rows. However, we were puzzled as to why our test vehicle did not have child seat anchors in the third-row cushions.

The Grand Cherokee L offers strong towing capability. It easily outpaces rivals with a 6,200-pound maximum capacity with the V6 and 7,200 pounds with the V8.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Engine Performance

Unless a new powerplant is released, Jeep will again equip the 2025 Grand Cherokee with a single engine: a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6 producing 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet torque. All Jeep Cherokee 2025 variants get an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, although all-wheel drive is available.

Jeep provides additional performance equipment for both on- and off-road use, including an available rear limited-slip differential, two transfer cases, and an optional air suspension that adds 2.5 inches of ground clearance for 10.9 inches.

In our tests, a Jeep Grand Cherokee with all-wheel drive went from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. The EPA estimates fuel economy to be 19/26 mpg city/highway in 2024. The maximum towing capacity is 6,200 pounds.

The standard V6 engine in the Grand Cherokee could be more exciting. In our testing, 0-60 mph took about 8.0 seconds, which is slow for a five-passenger midsize SUV.

The available 4xe plug-in hybrid drive system feels quicker. The brakes give you confident and easy stopping power. ​​We also liked the steering for its light but accurate characteristics.

The Grand Cherokee isn’t particularly athletic. It’s not a clunky SUV, but its grip limits and driving enjoyment are below average. For good measure, the Grand Cherokee is more capable off-road than most other mid-size crossover SUVs.

2025 Grand Cherokee L Engine

We predict the 2025 Grand Cherokee L to have a base 3.6-liter V6 engine (Jeep offers a muscular 5.7-liter V8 in top trims). The V6 is a likable engine, but it often feels like it’s working too much in a vehicle this size.

The 2025 Grand Cherokee L accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, which is relatively slow for its class. We also had reservations about the light, the loose feel of the steering, and the lack of feedback from the brake pedal. Benefits include smooth shifting through the automatic transmission’s eight gears, contributing to a comfortable and relaxing driving experience.

Of course, a Jeep. And while your capabilities are limited to a 17-foot three-row SUV, the Grand Cherokee takes full advantage of what it has. The four-wheel drive system helps make the most of slippery situations.

2025 Jeep Cherokee Off-Road Capabilities

The 2025 Cherokee is designed to handle any type of terrain. It boasts exceptional off-road capabilities that are among the best in its class. It is equipped with JJeep’s famous four-wheel-drive system, which includes a low-range transfer case and an electronic locking rear differential.

With a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, the Cherokee can easily maneuver over obstacles such as rocks.

The Cherokee has an advanced suspension system to enhance its off-road capabilities further. Its four-wheel independent suspension provides a smooth ride on the road while offering excellent articulation off-road. The suspension is adjustable, allowing drivers to choose between different settings based on their driving conditions.

2025 Cherokee MPG

On estimates, the Grand Cherokee achieves a combined EPA estimate of 22 mpg, which is above average for amid-size SUVs. We found that EEPA’s estimates were feasible in real-world testing.

The Grand Cherokee L with 4WD and V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined, which is average for an amid-size three-row SUV.
