2022 RAM HD The truck war continues here at Motor City as new performance specifications were recently announced for the Ram HD 2022. As of this writing, the Ram 3500 with Cummins 6.7-liter High Output Turbo Diesel has the most torque of any HD truck on the market at 1,075 lb. -ft.
The Ram’s new torque figures slip past Ford’s PowerStroke (1050 lb-ft of torque) and easily surpass the current Duramax (910 lb-ft of torque).
Of course, the torque figures only tell part of the story. There’s a lot more that goes into how well a truck will handle heavy loads and trailers.
High torque numbers make headlines (hence this article) but remember to consider your truck as a whole rig and not just rely on one set of numbers. Besides, we still have to leave it to Ram.
“Ram regains its capability leadership by delivering the highest torque rating ever for a diesel pickup truck and the toughest gooseneck towing capacity,” said Mike Koval Jr.,
Head of Ram Brand. “We understand the attributes that matter most to our customers in the heavy-duty segment; they demand enduring and hardworking abilities.”
2022 RAM HD Preview: The Power to Haul
2022 RAM HD Rumors In a best-in-class game of chess, the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 rise above rival heavy-duty trucks with unmatched ride quality and luxury options.
The largest rams boast maximum towing numbers and great engine torque they can pull up to 37,100 pounds, and their Cummins diesel deliver up to 1075 lb-ft of torque. Plus, both the heavy-duty Ford and Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra drive as smooth or gracefully as the most luxurious Rams.
That’s because the Rams’ most luxurious interior is serene and upholstered in rich materials. There’s also no shortage of high-tech options, with plenty of driver assistance and a large 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Yes, the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 are very capable and more luxurious than other HD pickup trucks, which earned them the Editor’s Choice award.
For 2022, heavy-duty Ram pickups have maximum torque and a higher tow rating. The 3500 with Cummins diesel now produces up to 1075 lb-ft of torque. It can now pull up to 37,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch too.
There is also a newly available digital rearview mirror that displays a video feed from the rear camera.
2022 RAM HD Interior
As with most pickups, Ram’s extensive number of trim levels and cabin styling means interior materials, passenger space, and the number of in-cab technology features can vary widely in terms of quantity and quality.
A single cabin, a spacious four-door Crew Cab, and a large Mega Cabin (which offers the largest rear seat in its class) are available. While heavy-duty trucks from Ford, Chevy, and GMC are also large and luxurious inside,
The Ram has the best interiors in its segment with luxury car-level details, extreme comfort, and clean modern design, while the highest trim levels offer premium materials.
The upper Longhorn trim even gets stripped wood and gold trim on the dashboard, doors and gauges along with the Longhorn logo hand-stamped into the wood on the truck’s top glovebox door. The cabin design also features functional controls and plenty of interior storage space.
The multilevel center console can accommodate a laptop with a 15.0-inch screen. Each Ram HD is also equipped with standard acoustic glass and active noise cancellation strapped into the audio system, and the result is a quiet truck in a luxury car—even diesel models.
Ram also packs its heavy-duty truck with in-cab technology that rivals some high-end luxury sedans and SUVs, including the latest infotainment technology. Intuitive Ram system, with simple menus and instructions.
It also responds quickly to user input, and its 8.0-inch touchscreen is large and well-placed. The Ram also offers a giant 12.0-inch reconfigurable touchscreen, which is the largest in its class and gives the truck interior a high-tech look and feel.
The system also features navigation, subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspots, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For your devices, the truck’s interior has five USB ports and up to three 115 volt outlets, which can handle up to 400 watts to quickly run or charge the appliance.

2022 RAM HD Exterior
With Cummins HO and 1000 lb-ft of torque, the Ram 3500 has a towing capacity of 37,100 pounds and a maximum payload of 7680 pounds.
When equipped with that engine, the more popular Crew Cab 2500 4×4 model offers a maximum payload of 2380 pounds and a maximum trailer weight rating of 19,010 pounds.
That’s a strong number for the class. With the 370-hp version of the Cummins, the 2500 4×4 Crew Cab can haul 3240 pounds and tow 16,870. By standard V-8, the truck can also handle 3,240 pounds, and a 14,370 tow, which is more than enough for most weekend jobs and expeditions.
Ram can perform the necessary installation of the five-wheel and gooseneck hardware at the factory.
This includes a fifth wheel chip, gooseneck bolt plate, gooseneck center casting, 4/7-pin connector (bumper), and another seven-pin connector on the bed.
Upgrades throughout the chassis, along with increased torque output, allow the 2022 Ram 3500 with Cummins High Output to have a max 37,100 lbs fifth-wheel/gooseneck towing capacity. Conventional towing increased to 23,000 lbs.
Like torque figures, these high-tow numbers are just part of the story for the 2022 Ram HD. We really want to give the Ram proper credit, but keep in mind that these high towing numbers are a marketing exercise.
When you see a tall tow number like this, it’s only reserved for certain models (usually regular cabs in a 4×2 configuration). In general, the more you add to the truck (such as getting into a crew cab or owning a 4×4), the more your crane capacity will decrease.
The trucks that look like the ones in the gallery below are trucks capable of achieving “headline” towing numbers.
Whenever you see a high towing number, like the one in this article, regardless of the carmaker, remember the phrase “when properly equipped” will always apply.
Ram isn’t the only one doing this. GM and Ford did too. Just do your research before buying and get a good idea of the weight of your trailer when it’s full.
And whatever this automaker says, never push your truck to that limit. Pulling in a straight line is one thing, but braking and steering, especially in the mountains, is another.
Apart from those deviations, the digital mirrors will help when maneuvering the Ram HD 2022. The digital mirrors display real-time video from the rear-facing camera (can revert to the traditional mirror if the driver wishes).
Digital mirrors are available on all Ram HD 2022 trucks and provide a wider view around the rear.
2022 RAM HD MPG
Fuel economy is not estimated by the EPA on commercial vehicles like the Ram 2500 and 3500 with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of over 8500 pounds.
Although we only tested one of these giant Rams—the 3500 with the high-output Cummins, four-wheel drive, mega cab, and dual rear axle—it did 16 mpg on our 75-mph real-world fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regiment.
2022 RAM HD Engine
Three machines are available. Standard power across all models comes from a 410-hp 6.4-liter V-8, which makes 429 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with an excellent eight-speed automatic.
This is the only engine and transmission offered in the Power Wagon, which is exclusively four-wheel drive. However, every other model is also offered with a 6.7-liter inline-six Cummins diesel engine with rear or four-wheel drive. Two diesel versions are available.
The former is available in the 2500 and 3500 models and produces 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. The 400-hp high-output version, which is only available on the 3500, delivers an incredible 1075 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are powered by a six-speed automatic transmission while its diesel competitors all pack a more modern 10-speed transmission.
At 1060 pounds, the Cummins engine outperforms the V-8 by 490, so the diesel models don’t handle well around town, and they’re not fast, but they can haul and tow significantly more weight.
Ram has done a great job perfecting Cummins. While it’s still noisier than the V-8, it’s no longer a beast.

2022 RAM HD Transmission
Ram and Cummins increase the thrust of the variable geometry turbocharger and increase the flow rate of the fuel delivery system. Changes to 2022 account for an additional 75 lb-ft. torque versus the 2020 model.
It’s worth noting the 1,075 lb-ft torque figure. applies to the High Output version of the 6.7 liter Cummins Turbo Diesel, which is only available for the Ram 3500 HD.
If you opt for the Ram 2500, the truck will come with a standard output Cummins engine with 850 lb-ft. torque.
Another major difference is where the peak torque reaches the rpm band. The standard output Cummins delivers peak torque at 1,700 rpm, while the High Output version will do so at 1,356 RPM.
The High Output engine benefits from the heavy-duty Aisin six-speed automatic in 3.75 first gear, while the standard Cummins uses an FCA-built six-speed automatic box (68RFE) in 3.23 first gear.
Horsepower will be different too, if only slightly. The standard Cummins produces 370 horsepower while the High Output version puts out 400 horsepower.
Both engines feature a compacted graphite iron block, pushrod-operated overhead valves, and a high-pressure common rail fuel injection system in terms of internal construction and mechanics.
Oil capacity (12 liters) and coolant capacity (23.8 liters) do not change between the two engines.
Equally important is the base of the 2022 Ram HD. That High Output Cummins, while impressive, requires a solid backbone to stay.
The Ram HD 2022 relies on a ladder-style frame with full box rails and unique structural cross members specifically for the five-wheel and goose-neck towing.
2022 RAM HD Price
Most Ram HD buyers are willing to pay for diesel, but the standard 6.4-liter petrol engine is quite capable, even at 3500. For the best mix of capability, space, luxury and price, we’ll stick with the best.
The popular model, namely the 2500 4×4 Crew Cab Laramie. While more on sale with Cummins, unless pulling a big trailer is a high priority for you, stick with the 410-hp V-8, which is faster around town and pairs with an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission.
With dollar savings, the springs for the limited-slip differential and load-leveling air suspension further enhance Ram’s already impressive ride quality.
However, if you plan to go off-road, skip the air suspension and add the Off-Road package. It adds Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and downhill control.
