We’ve recorded the 395-hp version from 5.7 to a low six on the way to 60 mph, and that’s also a four-wheel-drive crew cabin. The question of whether, say, the 410 lb-ft 5.7 eTorque would be “enough” for the TRX-Lite is more a marketing question than a capability question.

While we don’t think the TRX with the available EcoDiesel V-6 Ram 1500 is likely due to its horsepower deficit (only 260 horses makes a bad message) and the number of cylinders, the thought crosses our minds at every charge. After all, the six turbos are torque motors, offering up to 480 lb-ft for the 2020 model.

In the regular 1500 4WD, the EcoDiesel managed 21/29/24 in EPA testing—and even more in the special fuel-efficient HFE variant. Even with the TRX’s wider body penalty, higher ride height and protruding tires, we don’t think the EcoDiesel is unlikely to roughly double the TRX’s fuel economy.

Resetting the motor to, say, 300 hp and 500 lb-ft—if that’s possible, and we’re not saying that—could give the marketing team enough ammunition to make it work. We love torque, and we love the EcoDiesel’s off-road performance and fuel economy on the regular 1500—and it’s pretty much the same off-road-oriented Rebel as the GMC Sierra AT4 diesel.

Since Ram had already decided that the Rebel was finally a match for the torque-efficient EcoDiesel, it wasn’t out of the question.

But the TRX EcoDiesel might be slow. Like, really slow — sort of the antithesis of what TRX is. As much as torque and economy appeal to us, we can’t ignore the fact that the Rebel EcoDiesel took 8.1 seconds to hit 60 mph in our tests. Even without the beefy Hellcat motor, the TRX is a heavier truck, with a bigger chassis.

The weight won’t help the EcoDiesel, even if it does generate additional power. We can dream about the oil-burning advantages of the TRX, but the truth is that the EcoDiesel, in its current iteration, will almost certainly not cut it—the 392 would be a better fit, if not so efficient.
