Many buyers will stick with the T5 powertrain, which in 2021 is good for 250 hp. When that turbo-four isn’t enough, try the turbocharged and supercharged T6 which makes 316 hp in the 2021 model.
At the top of the range there will be a plug-in hybrid model that builds up to the 415 horsepower combined system in the previous model. It’s a strong package, but be sure to test the taste of low-speed brakes before driving on to that hybrid model.

We’ve used this version of the system in the Polestar 2 electric vehicle and found the response was fast, but the menu takes some getting used to.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is Bluetooth connectivity and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot that is supported by a 4G LTE data connection.

The Volvo version of the Android infotainment system is already equipped with the XC40 Rechargeable electric crossover, and is now being added to more models. Apart from the XC60, the systems have also been confirmed for the S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country.

2022 Volvo XC60 Engine
We don’t expect to see any changes to the available XC60 powertrains. In the US it offers the T5, T6, and T8 models, all of which are powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine. The T5 version of this engine is turbocharged and produces 250 horsepower; The T6 adds a supercharger for a total of 316 horsepower; and the T8 is a plug-in hybrid with an electric motor producing a total output of 400 horsepower.
Volvo offers three different powertrains – T5, T6 and T8 – in the XC60, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard but an upgrade to the T6 or T8 Recharge powertrains adds all-wheel drive. Under the hood of the base the T5-badged XC60s is a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 250 horsepower.
The 6.4 seconds zero-to-60-mph time in our tests was adequate but mediocre. The T6 is powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the T5, but a supercharger is added for more zing. With 316 ponies in the stable, it felt fresher and performed on our test track much faster. The T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain borrows the T6 engine and pairs it with a set of electric motors totaling 400 horsepower in the Refill model or 415 in the Polestar Engineered model.
The XC60 takes corners well, feels road bound as it goes, and changes course confidently, but doesn’t inspire hooliganism like the Porsche Macan. The ride can feel a little harsh when driving on rougher roads, but on the smooth side it feels nice and quiet.
2022 Volvo XC60 Battery
Using the Recharge or Polestar model adds the T8’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, which carries an estimated electric distance of just 19 miles. The XC60 T8 can be charged at a public charging station or at home via a 110 or 220 volt outlet, but Volvo also provides a handy feature that can charge the battery with the energy generated from the SUV’s petrol engine when needed.
