In Edmunds’ testing, the Mazda CX-50, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester all outperformed the Cherokee and should be considered before making a purchase.

For the 2023 model year, there were minor updates to the Cherokee. The previous year saw the introduction of the Cherokee X trim, which had a rugged appearance, a V6 engine, all-terrain tires, and off-road suspension.

Early reports indicate that the 2024 model will continue to receive minor changes and that a redesign is not expected until at least the 2025 model year. If Jeep does decide to redesign the Cherokee, there is a possibility that a 4xe plug-in hybrid option will be included, similar to other models in the Jeep lineup.

The Grand Cherokee was last redesigned for the 2022 model year, and we don’t expect any substantial changes in the lineup for 2024. That means it will most certainly maintain its position in the class against competitors such as the Honda Passport and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, both of which are more street-oriented than off-road ready.

The three-row Honda Pilot was updated last year and now includes an off-road variant with capabilities comparable to the Grand Cherokee, and we wouldn’t be shocked if the next Passport receives similar enhancements.

Serious off-roaders will have to trade some comfort and on-road composure if they choose the tough Ford Bronco over something from Land Rover. This puts the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee in a favorable position in terms of pricing, capability, and luxury. Design and Features

First and foremost, the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee will have an updated exterior design that gives it a modern and stylish look. The new model will feature a larger and more aggressive front grille, redesigned headlights, and updated taillights.

We evaluated the Grand Cherokee with the optional V8 engine, which has the obvious benefit of more horsepower. It delivers instant power when needed, and the Grand Cherokee with the V8 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds in our testing. Because of the two extra engine cylinders and the smooth and quick-shifting automatic transmission, this is definitely the fastest in the class.

The brakes provide confident and effortless stopping power, and our test Jeep came to a stop from 60 mph in 115 feet. We also appreciate the steering because it is light but precise. The Grand Cherokee’s on-road performance around corners is less spectacular. It is not a clunky SUV, but its grip and driver enjoyment levels are below average.

As a consolation prize, the Grand Cherokee excels off-road. With the Quadra-Trac II 4WD system and adjustable air suspension, your Jeep will be the most competent midsize SUV on the market.


Even though it doesn’t have the largest cabin in the class, the Grand Cherokee has plenty of space. The reclining second-row may accommodate people up to 6 feet tall. Unfortunately, the Grand Cherokee rides somewhat high, and you’ll need to take a significant step up to get in. We also saw some instances of poor forward sight due to the Grand Cherokee’s wide front pillars and side view mirrors. Invest in a surround-view camera system to help remove the guessing out of parking.

Most of the controls are simple to use, but some of the dials are too small, and other buttons are at odd angles. In addition, some sunlight angles can entirely hide the labeling for several of the touch-sensitive controls.


Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system is standard on the Grand Cherokee. It offers sharp graphics and an optional integrated navigation system with turn-by-turn directions. However, we did note that the screen’s upward tilt can occasionally catch glare from direct sunlight. The 19-speaker McIntosh surround-sound system in our test vehicle provided rich, distortion-free sound.

Smartphone integration is standard, as are an absurd amount of USB ports (we counted 12 in our loaded test car). We also enjoy the Grand Cherokee’s suite of electronic driving aids for its breadth and functionality. The adaptive cruise control, for example, slows and accelerates gently, and the lane keeping system works well without making too many harsh modifications.


The cargo capacity behind the second row of seats in the Grand Cherokee is 37.7 cubic feet, which is typical for a midsize SUV. (For example, the Atlas Cross Sport from Volkswagen has 40.3 cubes.) The rear seats can also be separated and folded flat to accommodate bulky goods. For some, the relatively high load-in height may be the only barrier.

There are plenty of cupholders and roomy center console compartments in the first and second seats for small items. The back seat has plenty of room. The outboard chairs have two sets of anchors that are conveniently accessible under beautiful leather coverings.

With a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds with the V6 and 7,200 pounds with the V8, the Grand Cherokee handily outperforms competitors.


The Grand Cherokee excels in this category. Even on lengthy excursions, the front seats are exceptionally comfortable, and both the front seats and the rear outboard seats may be heated and ventilated. The optional air suspension contributes to a comfortable ride that softens road imperfections without feeling too soft and floating.

Our Grand Cherokee had the optional four-zone climate control. It does a fantastic job of keeping a specified temperature, but even with the fans at maximum speed, it didn’t blow as much air as we expected. The Grand Cherokee fell short in one area: highway noise, which was a little too much for an expensive SUV.

Fuel Efficiency

The Grand Cherokee with 4WD and the V6 engine has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 22 mpg, which is above average for a midsize SUV. The Grand Cherokee is also available with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Our test vehicle, on the other hand, came with a V8 engine, for which we must rate this area. The Grand Cherokee earns an EPA-estimated 17 mpg combined with the V8 and 4WD. Our test vehicle returned 17 mpg on our highway-biased standardized evaluation route, indicating that we wouldn’t likely see anything higher than 17 mpg in normal driving. So put some money aside for gas.


The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in five trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit. The trims are organized in a conventional ladder fashion, with the upper levels adding more functionality to the trims below. The Trailhawk is an outlier, with specific off-road improvements not found on other models.

Off-Road Capability

One of the most notable features of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is its off-road capability, and the 2024 model is no exception. The Grand Cherokee will come equipped with Jeep’s legendary four-wheel drive system, providing drivers with improved traction and handling in any terrain. Additionally, the 2024 Grand Cherokee will feature an updated Quadra-Lift air suspension system, providing improved ground clearance and ride comfort.

Trim Levels

We especially appreciate its finely tuned advanced driving aids, which make driving easier and safer. Where the Grand Cherokee falls short is in terms of value. It does not have as much standard equipment as competitors and is priced far into luxury territory when all of the boxes are checked.

Jeep has recently pushed its goods toward the luxury end of the range, and the 2024 Grand Cherokee L is an excellent example of the off-road brand’s imaginative vision. This three-row family SUV preserves the Jeep’s go-anywhere prowess, but its interior is far superior to that of a Wrangler. While the base Laredo models are good, the high-end Overland and Summit trims with Grand Wagoneer-inspired interiors really stand out.

This means a higher starting price than competitors like the Honda Pilot and Kia Telluride, which may put top-spec Grand Cherokee L versions out of reach for ordinary mid-size shoppers. If you have the money, the Grand Cherokee L impresses with a pleasant ride, a slew of desirable extras, and plenty of power.

A V-6 engine is standard, but a 357-hp V-8 engine is available, increasing the Grand Cherokee’s towing capacity to a formidable 7200 pounds. If you don’t require a third row of seats, the smaller, two-row Grand Cherokee provides a comparable experience at a somewhat lower price.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort

While base Laredo models provide the necessities, Summit and Overland trims add luxuries like quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays. All Grand Cherokee L versions include a third row of seats, allowing for up to seven passengers via an optional second-row bench seat; a pair of captain’s chairs are standard, allowing for six passengers.

If you don’t require the third row of the Grand Cherokee L, consider the two-row Grand Cherokee, which we discuss separately. The Grand Cherokee L’s inside is downright opulent in higher grades, and Jeep provides luxury items like massaging front seats, quilted leather upholstery, and open-pore wood trim as options.

Connectivity and infotainment

The Grand Cherokee’s dashboard features a 10.1-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio as standard. Optional in-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates is available, while higher-end models include wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

While the Laredo and Limited models come standard with a six-speaker radio, you can upgrade to a nine-speaker Alpine audio system or a high-end 19-speaker McIntosh configuration. A 10.3-inch front-passenger display, similar to that used on larger Wagoneer models, is available as an option. Optional 10.1-inch screens, positioned on the backs of the front seats, function as rear-seat entertainment displays with Amazon FireTV and Wi-Fi access.

Performance, Engine, and Transmission

The three-row Grand Cherokee L, like the two-row Grand Cherokee, is available with either a 290-hp V-6 or a 357-hp V-8 with either rear- or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Those looking to maximum towing capacity should choose for the V-8, which can tow 7200 pounds; V-6 versions have a tow rating of 6200 pounds. After testing both, we favor the V-8, which has a more thunderous rumbling and more linear power delivery.

Our V-8-powered Summit Reserve test vehicle hit 60 mph in 6.2 seconds on our test track. In comparison, the V-6 is pokier and less polished, taking 8.0 seconds to reach 60 mph in our hands. The Grand Cherokee L has a comfortable ride and competent handling; we found the steering to be properly weighted and the brake pedal to be reassuringly solid.

The Grand Cherokee L can be available with one of three all-wheel-drive systems, as well as an optional air suspension that can be modified to give greater ground clearance, to continue Jeep’s tradition of off-road performance.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy

The rear-wheel-drive V-6 model is estimated to get 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway; adding all-wheel drive reduces each of those statistics by 1 mpg. These figures are comparable to those of V-6-powered competitors such as the Kia Telluride and the Chevrolet Traverse. Except for a new set of 18-inch wheels for the mid-tier Limited trim, the Grand Cherokee L remains unchanged until 2024.

The Limited trim level of the Grand Cherokee L strikes the optimum blend of features and affordability. A power-operated rear liftgate, automatic high-beam headlamps, remote start, interior ambient lighting, driver memory settings, leather upholstery, and heated second-row seats appear to be well worth the extra money.
