2024 Dodge Durango Review

The 2024 Dodge Durango is a three-row, family-hauling SUV that emanates confidence in a way that most other SUVs just cannot. The Durango also puts its money where its racing stripes are when coupled with the optional V-8 engine. Even with the base V-6, the Dodge provides adequate power and, as an added benefit, has a towing capacity that exceeds that of most competitors.

If none of those engines is sufficient, Dodge offers outrageously powerful SRT models ranging from the 475-hp Durango SRT 392 to the supercharged, 710-hp Durango SRT Hellcat, which we assess separately. If the Dodge’s WWE manner isn’t your thing, more demure fan faves like the Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride, or newbies like the Mazda CX-90 and Toyota Grand Highlander, may be a better fit.

The 2024 Durango receives only minor updates. The Citadel trim joins the R/T in offering the Tow N Go option, which includes aesthetics inspired by the more powerful SRT models, as well as performance upgrades such as an SRT Performance exhaust. However, if recent reports are to be believed, it probably isn’t. According to Mopar Insiders, the next-generation Dodge Durango will go into production alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the company’s Warren Truck Assembly Plant, about 20 minutes north of Detroit.

This means the Dodge Durango 2024 will adopt a full-sized body-on-frame architecture that will compete effectively with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. That would be a significant increase in size.

We’ve talked about the highly anticipated reintroduction of the high-performance Dodge Durango SRT HELLCAT for the impending 2024 model year throughout the last week. Dodge is now preparing to reveal the thrilling specifics of its 2024 Dodge Durango lineup, which includes numerous stunning new features.

Mopar Insiders indicated in 2018 that the new-generation Durango could move to a body-on-frame architecture based on the Ram 1500, like the competing Chevy Tahoe, though such a significant change isn’t the kind that can escape the usually well-connected Automotive News.

If Durango has a future, there’s a high chance that Stellantis has yet to finalize how it will execute its next-generation model.

Despite its age, the Durango remains an attractive family SUV and has received regular updates to maintain its status. 2021 saw the introduction of the long-awaited Durango SRT Hellcat, which in addition to pushing the top speed of the three paddlers to 180 mph takes its tow rating up to 8,700 pounds—only the Ford Expedition surpasses those in its class.

And although the Hellcat doesn’t continue past 2021, those two ratings apply to lower SRT models, which also benefit from standard technology that continues to improve. For 2022, the Durango gets standard blind spot monitoring as well as rear traffic alerts, not to mention another upgrade to the lower trim.

Not all cars are gracefully gray, but the Durango is one of the lucky few to own one.

Dodge Durango 2024

2024 Dodge Durango Despite rumors that the Durango could be discontinued for 2023, it seems that the SUV will stay alive and may get a redesign for the 2024 model year. The current generation of Durango has been around since 2011 and only got the latest update in 2021, so it’s not necessarily out of date. Nonetheless, the Durango has stiff competition with platform-sharing vehicles, the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.

Since they share the same unibody architecture, Durango and Cherokee have some sort of rivalry between them. The Grand Cherokee and the regular Cherokee have always been more popular and seen as more of a performance car. Jeep has boosted that trust even more since it recently moved to Giorgio’s Stellantis platform for the Cherokee.

Although Jeep has more popular models, the Durango is on track to sell 60,000 units this year in America alone. So while production of Durango at its current factory will be discontinued, Durango is not.

Today, both the Durango and Cherokee are built at the Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit. Because Cherokees were in high demand, however, factories had difficulty keeping up with their global production. For this reason, Durango production was moved to the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Warren, MI.

This is where the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer were built. Since, for 2024, Durango is abandoning the unibody frame in favor of a body-on-frame architecture like the Wagoneer has, this move makes sense.

Changing the frame should bring some major improvements to Durango, as one of its gripes is towing capacity. The Durango can currently only tow 8,700 pounds while the Wagoneer can pull up to 10,000 pounds. If switching frames helps the Durango get the same boost, it will surely help close the gap that exists between the Durango and other models it rivals.

The 2021 update for the Durango includes new technology, a new instrument panel, a new front bumper, and a new engine, but with the revamped frame, we can imagine that almost everything will be updated again. While we don’t fully know what this redesign will look like, it’s reasonable to expect that this next-generation Durango will also share a decent number of powertrains and other aspects of the Wagoneers, perhaps including the upcoming 3.0-liter turbocharged.

GME-T6 inline six-cylinder engine. That engine should be in the upcoming PHEV version of the Wagoneer. If this is true, it could mean Durango will also see a PHEV version in the future.

2024 Dodge Durango Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2024 Dodge Durango’s interior is spacious and luxurious. The vehicle can accommodate up to seven passengers, with ample head and leg room. The dashboard features a large 10.1-inch touchscreen that houses the infotainment system. The seats are comfortable and supportive, with leather as an option on higher trim levels.

Every manufacturer employs a mix of materials ranging from low to high grade, but some designs, such as the Durango’s, are done better than others. Although the designers focused on ergonomics, material quality, and general comfort, competitors provide larger second and third-row passenger rooms. The driver is faced by a set of gauges in red and white on a black background.

The steering wheel has a leather-wrapped rim and a stylish metal-look finish. The paddle shifters positioned behind the wheel on our R/T test vehicle worked with a gratifying click. With all of the seats folded flat, we could accommodate 30 carry-on baggage within the Durango’s cabin, but with all seats in place, we could only stow four behind the third row. In all measurements, this is two greater than the Acadia.

The 2024 Dodge Durango dazzles with its exceptional performance and an interior that perfectly blends practicality, advanced technology, and striking style. The spacious inside is supported by a redesigned driver-centric cockpit, instrument panel, center console, and front door uppers, all of which include seat memory switches, assuring accessibility across the entire Durango family. All Durango versions come standard with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

The driver-oriented cockpit, inspired by the Challenger, emanates refinement, luxury, and cutting-edge technology. The available 10.1-inch touchscreen is a noteworthy feature, cleverly tilted 7 degrees towards the driver for ease of usage. The middle stack features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect 5 system, which has been designed with a horizontal orientation for convenience.

The chrome-striped toggles on the mid-mounted switch bank add to the overall athletic and high-tech character of the interior. Comfort functions, including heated and cooled seat buttons, are strategically positioned for easy access, rounding off the Durango’s upmarket and driver-focused experience.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Durango’s contoured dashboard houses one of the best infotainment systems on the market. The base SXT and mid-level GT versions have an 8.4-inch display, while the Citadel and R/T have a 10.1-inch screen that is optional on the GT and standard on the Citadel.

Both screens come equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional rear-seat entertainment system has two screens as well as HDMI and RCA connectors for connecting additional devices. We noticed good audio clarity for Bluetooth phone calls, and one caller even mentioned hearing the thunderous rumble of the V-8 engine.

Comfort

The inside is light and airy, with good vision, however, the front and rear pillars might hinder visibility in tight conditions. The cabin is straightforward and user-friendly, and the control interface is simple to comprehend and locate. All seating locations, including the third row, are likewise easy to enter and exit.

Thanks to the various seat and steering wheel adjustments, drivers of practically any size should be able to find a comfortable seating position.

The seats in the Durango are spacious and comfy in all settings. The first and second rows have plenty of legroom, while the third row may easily accommodate larger children. The climate control works nicely, and there is enough ventilation for all three rows.

The ride of the Durango SRT, on the other hand, leaves something to be desired. While pleasant, it will not put you to sleep on long car rides. The engine and road noise are both pervasive, which may be a good thing. The exhaust note is enthralling.

The Uconnect 4C interface on the 8.4-inch screen is user-friendly and works well with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration systems, despite feeling a little old. Driver aids like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are useful, although they are usually available as options on the Durango. The updated Harman Kardon audio system sounds fantastic and is well worth purchasing.

Storage

Despite having performance as its first focus, the Durango SRT manages to be practical and versatile, as an SUV should be. With all the seats folding, there’s 85.1 cubic feet of room, which puts it somewhat above the middle of the class. Small-item storage is ideal in a three-row SUV with enough cubbies and cupholders to accommodate all passengers. The highlight of this Durango, however, may be its exceptional 8,700-pound tow rating when properly equipped.

The Durango’s optional 360-hp V-8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission provide a significant increase in towing capability (up to 8700 pounds), but the 295-hp V-6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission are the more efficient coupling. Of course, the Durango’s fuel economy isn’t as good as that of its four-cylinder competitors, but the trade-off for the more fun V-8 and its massive towing capacity may be worth it for some consumers.

We put the V-6 and V-8 engines through their paces with the standard eight-speed automatic and optional all-wheel drive. The V-6 Durango took 7.4 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the V-8 took 6.2 seconds. The Dodge suspension balances sportiness and comfort, yet the steering feel and braking performance remind you that you’re driving an SUV.

Although it isn’t overtly sporty, the Durango’s rear-wheel-drive chassis gives it an athletic feel, and its muscle-car mentality shines through in everyday use. It manages to provide a comfortable ride while being a family-friendly SUV that is both enjoyable to drive and easy to live with.

In the 2024 Dodge Durango Engine section the current SRT Hellcat model uses the iconic 6.2-liter supercharged V8 to produce 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. The power of this engine is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission which allows this large SUV to reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Two classic Hemi engines can also be an option as the main source of power for the 2024 Dodge Durango. The two Hemi engines are the 5.7-liter V8, which produces 392 horsepower, and the 6.4-liter V8, which produces 471 horsepower.

Although the Stellantis does have a new turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine called the Hurricane that should offer more power and better fuel economy figures than the Hemi engine. This engine may reach 500 horsepower and is expected to see a PHEV version in the future.

Performance and Engine Options

Dodge is known for producing powerful vehicles, and the 2024 Durango is no exception. Vehicles are available with three different engine options, each with its own unique advantages.

Basic Engine

The base engine is a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options.

Upgraded Engine

For those looking for more power, the 2024 Durango is also available with two upgraded engines. First is the 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The second is a 6.4-liter V8 engine that produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy

Here’s a formula for you: SRT equals poor fuel economy. That’s just how things are. The Durango SRT is rated to earn 15 mpg in combined driving (13 city/19 highway) by the EPA. We got 15.5 mpg on our 120-mile test route, demonstrating that the EPA’s projections are at least reasonable. A rear-wheel-drive Durango with the V6 achieves the best fuel economy at 21 mpg combined. That’s a significant improvement, but it still falls short of comparable V6-equipped SUVs.

Performance

The Durango SRT, which we evaluated, exemplifies Dodge’s dedication to performance. The engine is powerful, easily propelling this 5,500-pound beast to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. However, the Durango behaves admirably in regular driving. The braking system is powerful and smooth.

Shifts in the transmission are also buttery smooth and don’t feel sudden in stop-and-go traffic. The steering and handling are adequate for a vehicle of this size and weight, although there are certain limitations. Performance and usability are rarely so consistent. The 2024 Dodge Durango comes with an incredible selection of engine options, allowing it to stand out in the competitive full-size E-SUV category.

The SRT HELLCAT is the top of the line, with its magnificent supercharged 6.2-liter (376 cubic-inch) HEMI® HELLCAT V8 engine. This beast produces a whopping 710 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. The SRT392 is a slightly tamer but still powerful option, with a 6.4-liter (392 cubic-inch) SRT HEMI® V8 producing 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.

Stepping down from the SRT trims, the Durango R/T models come standard with a 5.7-liter (345 cubic-inch) HEMI® V8 engine that produces a capable 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (optional on Citadel versions). The SXT, GT, and Citadel models, on the other hand, are powered by the legendary 3.6-liter (220 cubic-inch) Pentastar V6, which produces up to 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque.

Whatever engine you choose, all Durango models come standard with the smooth-shifting 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic gearboxes for a refined driving experience. With such a varied selection of power options, the 2024 Durango is poised to dominate its class.

Towing Dominance

Durango will maintain its prestigious reputation for unrivaled towing capabilities in 2024. With the Tow N’ Go Package, the SRT HELLCAT, SRT392, and R/T models now have an outstanding towing capacity of 8,700 lbs (3,946 kg). The great news is that the Tow N’ Go Package is now available for the luxury Citadel model when partnered with the 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine. This means you can enjoy top hauling performance without sacrificing opulence.

The Tow N’ Go Package, on the other hand, is more than just towing prowess. It also raises the peak speed of the 5.7-liter HEMI® Durango all-wheel drive (AWD) to 145 mph (233 km/h). Along with this, it adds a variety of Drive Modes, including Track, Sport, Snow, and Tow, as well as improving the car with the SRT performance exhaust and fine-tuning the SRT active noise cancellation.

The 2020 V-8-powered Durango R/T outperformed its EPA rating (and even its own V-6-powered model) as well as the lighter and more modern GMC Acadia V-6 in our highway fuel-economy test. Forward Collision Warning, in particular, is offered as an optional package for the base SXT model, adding an extra layer of protection by warning the driver to probable frontal crashes. This feature enables the driver to avoid or decrease the severity of an accident by taking evasive action or using the brakes in a timely manner.
