2022 Volvo S90 In 2017, Volvo Cars began a close partnership with Google. This partnership is intended to enable the automaker to use an infotainment system supported by the Android operating system developed specifically for cars.
Not long ago, the fruit of the partnership was the Volvo XC40 Recharge electric crossover, which was updated in October 2019. More than a year later, Volvo and Google introduced siblings to their first model.
The results of their collaboration can be found on the Cross Country XC60, S90, V90, and V90 starting in the 2022 Volvo S90 model year.
The models are part of an upcoming marque portfolio update. Just like the XC40 Recharge, the new model that adopts the Android infotainment system will benefit from the integration of Google’s apps and services into the in-car technology hub.
Of course, Volvo offers a Digital Services package, which will give customers the same experience they are used to on mobile, but with hands-free interaction. This is of course an attraction for consumers who rely heavily on technology in their mobility outside of the use of mobile phones.
The package includes access to Google applications and services, the Volvo On Call application, a cordless phone charger, and the data required to run the service. The Google Assistant plays a large role in enterprise applications and services, with functions such as controlling temperatures and setting destinations.
Also included are functions of playing music and podcasts, and sending messages, all via voice commands. Google Play, on the other hand, optimizes music and media applications for cars.
Meanwhile, the built-in Google Maps helps the navigation system which will greatly assist motorist mobility.
In a press release, Volvo also announced that for the 2022 Volvo S90 model year it will get the latest version of Volvo’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) which uses a variety of radar equipment, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.
More choices will also be added to the car options list. Volvo has yet to announce the 2022 Volvo S90 model lineup and specific updates included with the car, but it does say that the Volvo XC60 will go into production in late May 2021.
2022 Volvo S90 Review
The Volvo XC40 Recharge marks the beginning of a new era for Swedish carmakers in more ways than one. Not only is it Volvo’s first fully electric model, but also the first Volvo car to be equipped with a new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system.
Prior to the XC40 Recharge, an Android-powered infotainment system made its debut on Polestar 2. As part of a series of 2022 Volvo S90 model-year updates, Volvo has added the Android infotainment system to the XC60, S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country.
We think the Volvo’s S90 and V90 are some of the fancier luxury cars on the market, and they’re getting a little slimmer for 2021. The sedan, wagon, and Cross Country wagon models all get a slightly more modern look, along with a few extra features and trim options.
US details on 2022 Volvo S90 and V90 are not yet available, but Volvo says an updated model will come to our shores in the summer of 2020.
- Volvo refreshed the S90 sedan and V90 wagon with tweaked looks and some new features.
- In Europe, both models are getting 48-volt hybrid powertrains as standard, but we don’t think this is coming to the US.
- Look for more US-specific information on the Volvo 90-series 2021 lineup coming this summer.

The visual changes are slight and include different fog lamps, a reshaped front bumper, and a new tail lamp design for the V90 wagon model. There are also new wheel designs and new colors available inside and out. A new wool interior upholstery option is available, although we’re not counting on their availability in America.
In Europe, all 2022 Volvo S90 and V90 will now come standard with 48-volt hybrid systems, but considering Volvo refuses to bring this powertrain to the US for its refreshed XC90 SUV, we don’t think it will work out here for this sedan. and also a cart.
That means they will likely continue with the T5, T6, and T8 powertrain options that use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder combined with a variety of turbochargers, superchargers, and electric motors to boost power levels.
There is also an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins sound system and an air filter with a particle sensor that is claimed to improve cabin air quality. The USB-C charging port replaces the 12-volt outlet for the rear seats, and wireless smartphone charging is now available.
At this point, Volvo has only confirmed to C / D that the updated 2022 Volvo S90 and V90 will be present in the US, but more details for our market will arrive in the summer.

To offer an experience similar to an Android-powered smartphone but adapted for hands-free operation while driving, all Volvo cars with an Android-powered infotainment system will include a new Digital Services package that provides access to Google apps and services, the Volvo On Call app, phone chargers. wireless, and “all the data needed to run the service.”

Additional music and media apps optimized for the Volvo infotainment system such as Spotify can also be downloaded from Google Play.
In addition to the new infotainment system, the XC60, S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country have been updated with the latest Advanced Driver Assistance active safety technology featuring radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. New exterior color and finish options are also available including skin-free interior options for all Volvo 60-series and XC40 Recharge models.

For the 2022 model year, the exterior of the Volvo XC60 has also been refined subtly with a new bumper, updated grille, and new wheel options. Production of the Volvo XC60 2022 will start in May, with prices to be confirmed at a later date.
2022 Volvo S90 Infotainment Tech
The Volvo XC60, S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country are the next models in various companies to receive the new Google Android-powered infotainment system as part of the update for the 2022 model year.
The new system, which will also find its way into the recently announced all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge, is the first to be marketed with Google’s built-in apps and services.
This means there is a greater focus on hands-free interactions using the Google Assistant, with systems that respond to voice commands to change temperature, play music, send messages, or set navigation destinations, for example.
The latter, now based on Google Maps, is described by Volvo as ‘best in class’, with regularly updated maps and traffic data.
Other applications optimized for use in cars will be available through the Google Play Store, although access to these applications will require a Digital Services plan.
The plan includes a data connection fee to the local mobile network and will be standard across Volvo UK with the new Android-based infotainment system.
The plan lasts four years, after which the customer can choose an extension, the cost of which has not been announced.
However, Volvo owners won’t be disappointed if their Digital Service plan expires – Google Maps will still work, for example, although updating maps and other data will require an internet connection via the customer’s own mobile device.
Volvo says the package is related to cars, not individuals. When we test a new system, we will evaluate any privacy controls to ensure that future owners are not granted access to other people’s personal information.
Away from the infotainment system, the XC60, S90, and V90 are getting a number of revisions for the 2022 model year, including an updated driver assistance package with upgraded Pilot Assist.
There are new exterior color and upholstery options, including skin-free interior options for all 60-series and XC40 Recharge models.
