2023 Jeep Commander means different things to different people. For Americans, this is a midsize SUV (codenamed XK) that was offered until 2010 while Europeans and others know the same version with its internal name XH and its V6 diesel engine.
In China, this vehicle is dubbed used by SUV couples
version of Commander/Grand Commander which was launched in 2018 at the time as a follow-up to the Yuntu concept.
Continuing in August 2021 there is a new Commander in town. Aimed at Latin America and it’s more or less a seven-seater version of the recently updated Compass 2022.
Subject to a lengthy teaser campaign, the Brazilian version has finally been launched by parent company Jeep Stellantis and we’re dealing with the highest-reaching Overland trim. The question is will this be the newest release of the 2023 Jeep Commander? Let’s wait and see.
2023 Jeep Commander Preview
The Jeep Commander appears in service even though it’s unlikely to be used here. The Brazilian-made Commander, a three-row crossover, based on the Compass, has been revealed and features styling inspired by the new WL Grand Cherokee.
It will also be built in India, where it will carry the Meridian nameplate. Stellantis Australia said there were currently no plans to bring the commander here.
The Brazilian-made Commander will go on sale in Latin America in August 2021, with Autocar India reporting that the Meridian will go on sale in India in 2022. We also expect the Jeep Commander 2023 to launch soon as the Jeep India factory currently supplies the Compass in Australia, along with the SUV. Small jeep. also built in Italy and Mexico.
Revealed in Overland trim, the Commander bears a superficial resemblance to the Compass upfront, but features, among other things, a unique grille, front bumper and LED headlights.
At the rear, there is a “floating” treatment on the D-pillar reminiscent of the WL Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, as well as thinner taillights. The overall silhouette is boxier, with a longer rear overhang to accommodate third-row seats.
It will be offered in a choice of six and seven seats, with a six-seat option with a second-row captain’s seat.
New Jeep Commander
Jeep gave us our first look at the new Commander aimed at the South American market, this new base compact SUV is not related to the Grand Commander sold in China and shares its base with the Compass, but has a longer body with a unique design. and a three-row cabin for seven people.
Styling similar to the recently revamped Compass, but the Commander features a new face with headlight extensions, a slightly different grille, and a new bumper with lower air intakes and daytime running lights.
Profile It has the same square wheel arches, body-colored upholstery, and signature lines as the Compass, but the longer wheelbase, horizontal window lines, and dual-tone treatment are reminiscent of the Grand Cherokee.
At the rear, the taillights are elegantly similar to the Grand Cherokee L but positioned higher in harmony with the chrome blades. The rear overhang is much longer than on the Compass, allowing for more interior space.
Inside, the dashboard shared with the Compass features a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, but the Commander will likely have several trim options, including brown suede with bronze stitching and details.
What is different is the seven-seater three-row configuration, with more passenger space and more cargo space when the third row is folded.

2023 Jeep Commander Debut
The Jeep Commander 2023 is expected to return and with the latest changes of course. In the past, Jeep has taken over the Commander’s nameplate for a three-row compact crossover based on the updated 2022 Compass.
It was unveiled on Tuesday in Brazil where sales will begin on August 26. Production will also be managed in Brazil, particularly at the Stellantis plant in Pernambuco.
Commander confirmed for sale in Latin America only. Maybe too small for the United States, so don’t expect it here. Instead, Jeep introduced the mid-size Grand Cherokee L to our large family market. Automaker
also offers a full-size Wagoneer and a Grand Wagoneer aimed at buyers who need maximum space combined with a bit of luxury.
Two engines are expected to launch the Commander. The top-of-the-line option is expected to be a 2.0-liter turbodiesel at around 200bhp, while the alternative is 1.3-liter turbocharged petrol with an output of around 185bhp.
Neither of these thrusters is available in the relevant compasses we have here in the United States. The Compass is offered here exclusively with a 2.4-liter petrol engine that produces 177 hp. The
In other markets, the Compass is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain based on a 1.3-liter petrol engine at the front and an electric motor at the rear. This version of the powertrain should finally be offered at the Compass here, as Jeep plans to rock the rest of its lineup.
Note, Jeep also sells a model known as the Grand Commander in China, as well as a three-row compact crossover, but one that’s related to the Cherokee.
2023 Jeep Commander Specs
While Jeep hasn’t released the specs yet, we expect the car to share its engine range with the Compass. That means it can be offered with 1.3-liter TurboFlex petrol mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and a 2.0-liter MultiJet turbodiesel mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Power will be transmitted to the front or all four wheels (thus the 4×4 badge on the tailgate).
It looks like the 2023 Jeep Commander will be produced at Stellantis’ Pernambuco plant in Brazil just like its predecessor. Its official debut has not been scheduled and will certainly be followed by other markets in South America.
2023 Jeep Commander Interior
The interior must be familiar if you are familiar with the 2022 Compass, while the technical specifications have not been disclosed by Jeep. Our colleagues from Brazil’s Motor1.com say the 2.0-liter will produce around 200 horsepower via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, a new 1.3-liter turbocharged petrol engine compatible with flexible fuel is expected to produce 185 hp and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque via a six-speed automatic transmission and an optional 4×4.
Commander Overland will be available in exclusive interior colors, with brown leather seats, a black leather instrument panel, and brown suede details with glossy copper stitching.
There’s a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system like on the updated Compass, as well as a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Jeep Commander 2023 Exterior
The exterior design shows that this is more than just a long compass, as Jeep has gone to great lengths to give its identity to the greater Commander.
It is equipped with an LED light bar that acts as a daytime running light in the new bumper located just above the fog lamps. Metallic accents here and there adorn the front fascia of this SUV.
The side profile reveals a much larger greenhouse with a larger quarter glass reflecting the Commander’s rising footprint. The metal strip running down the sides of the vehicle before falling on the rear pillar makes it look a lot like what a two-row Grand Cherokee would have, as evidenced in our recent spy shot.
At the rear, the changes from the compass are significant as the Commander becomes slimmer, the taillights are raised. The tailgate looks much larger and hides the door handles rather than protruding under the license plate like on a small SUV.
The “TD” and “4×4” badges indicate that this is a vehicle driven by a turbodiesel engine that sends power to both axles.

Jeep Commander 2023 Powertrain
The Brazilian Jeep division has yet to confirm what powertrain the Commander will use, although the TD badge on the tailgate indicates a turbo-diesel – possibly a 2.0-liter Jeep four-cylinder – will be available.
In the Australian market of the Compass, it produces 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque, although overseas reports have suggested a 149kW version could power the Commander. It can also be joined by turbocharged 1.3-liter petrol with 134kW of power.
Commander has spied testing in Europe, indicating it could be available in additional markets outside of Latin America and India.
Jeep also sells the Grand Commander in China, although instead of a three-row crossover based on the Compass, it’s a three-row crossover based on the Cherokee. The Commander is a five-seat version.
It also bears more in common with the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer than the new Grand Cherokee and is the first Jeep to offer a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Jeep Commander 2023 Electric
Jeep plans to launch its first electric SUV in the first half of 2023. This all-electric Jeep will be equipped with several advanced technologies and features.
In addition, the electric SUV will also get a multi-power port, biometric facial recognition to unlock the vehicle, dynamic tire pressure for off-road tracks, peer-to-peer battery charging, and the ability to connect with drones.
Although information about Jeep’s first electric SUV is not known for sure, it is rumored that the all-electric Jeep will adopt the Wrangler-based EV concept. You could say Jeep’s first SUV was the all-electric Wrangler.
In its latest financial report, Jeep Stellantis has confirmed that it will launch 21 low-emission vehicles in the next two years. Jeep has also invested around $35.5 billion for the electrification of its vehicles by 2025.
Currently, Jeep itself already has a line of electric-based vehicles, including the Wrangler 4xe hybrid, Compass and Renegade plug-in hybrids, the Commander PHEV, and the Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid is currently being worked on.
2023 Jeep Commander Release Date
Production will take place at Pernambuco and Jeep says it will export the Commander to other Latin American markets following the August 26 launch in Brazil.
