2022 Nissan Sentra: New Mid-Size Sedan Review, Specs and Price

Posted on

2022 Nissan Sentra Back in 2020, Nissan revamped the Sentra, bringing a new look, upgraded engines, and more.

Still fresh, it is hoped that the Nissan Sentra 2022 can become the default model.

The Nissan Sentra 2021 looks really cool for a compact car that starts at $ 20,000. The second smallest sedan in Nissan’s lineup also combines its attractive exterior with a dashing interior.

This makes it a more mature alternative to the youthful designs of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Unfortunately, the Sentra’s superficial qualities don’t translate into fun behind the wheel as it does, say, in the pretty and sporty Mazda 3.

Nor were we impressed by the sluggish Sentra four-cylinder engine or the choppy ride the suspension provided in the sportiest SR model.

Even so, Sentra 2021 will obediently serve buyers who prioritize interior comfort, safety features, and style.

2022 Nissan Sentra Redesign

Nothing major as this compact car continues to feature 2020 model redesigns that reinforce style, promote road manners, and improve interiors.

The ’22 Sentra will return as a roomy front-wheel drive four-door sedan with one engine option and strong value-for-money appeal.

In fact, it will probably rely on the wholesale upgrades that the 2020 redesign makes to bring it up a little bit to the 2024 or ’25 model years when it’s due to a mid-cycle refresh.

Meanwhile, Nissan will concentrate on launching the latest editions of the more in demand and more profitable crossover SUVs, such as the Rogue and Pathfinder.

2022 Nissan Sentra SR Reviews

Nissan has made only minor changes to the 2022 Sentra lineup. The base model now comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which were previously unavailable.

The SR trim is now available with NissanConnect services and Wi-Fi access points, as well as a new two-tone paint combination (metallic electric blue with black roof). Plus, all three sedan trim levels are up to $ 100 from last year.

Interior Feature

Inside, Sentra has one of the prettiest designs in this segment. Drivers are faced with a set of simple analog gauges that match the 7.0-inch display on all but the base model.

The center of the dash features a trio of circular air vents on top of the rugged climate control. The inner material is a mix of hard and soft plastic, but the former covers the counting surface and helps cover the rest.

The model equipped with leather upholstered seats looks very luxurious, although it goes against the steering wheel of the flat-bottomed sports car. Nissan also pampers the front passengers with extra-comfortable Zero Gravity seats that are roomy, flexible, and supportive.

Opt for the available moonroof pieces for cab headroom, but otherwise, adults have plenty of room in the front and rear.

Infotainment and Technology

The touchscreen appears in the center of each Sentra dash and is equipped with a physical volume and adjustment knob.

While the base model has a 7.0-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the rest have an 8.0-inch drive and USB in the front and rear seats. The latest system also supports better options like SiriusXM satellite radio, Bose eight-speaker stereo, and Wi-Fi access point.

Engine Performance

Every 2022, the Sentra is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 149 hp along with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive.

While the shiftless automatic transmission simulates traditional gear changes, that doesn’t change the fact that the Sentra we tested was loud and slow, especially when trying to pass at highway speeds. There is not much entertainment behind the wheel either. Steering effort is heavy and predictable, but totally uncommunicative in rivals like the Civic and Mazda 3.

Nissan has independent rear suspension and wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches. The version we drive uses the larger set, which contributes to solid ride quality and excessive road noise.

However, Sentra is comfortable and suitable for day trips and weekend trips. We are very impressed with the brake system. It offers a convincing pedal feel and solid 70 mph stopping power, stopping at a class-competitive 170 feet.

Fuel Economy and MPG

The EPA estimates that the 2022 Sentra will produce up to 29 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. That figure drops to 28 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway with the sporty SR model.

Still, Nissan is as efficient as some of its competitors that also run on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and CVT, but the Toyota Corolla tops out at 31 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway.

The Sentra SR we use on our 75 mph highway fuel efficiency path, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, matches the government highway rating at 37 mpg. However, the Corolla XSE sedan we tested produced 41 mpg.

We’ll use a mid-tier SV trim that only costs about $ 1000 more than the base model. Add a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

We’ll also make it even better with the SV Premium Package that adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated front seats, upholstered leather seats, leather shift knobs, driver’s seat, and power-adjustable sunroof.

2022 Nissan Sentra New-Gen

The new generation 2022 Nissan Sentra sends this compact sedan up the ladder in terms of a mature look and feel.

Its mature appearance is accentuated by its long silhouette and hood, prominent V-motion grille, coupe-like-like rear glass, floating roof design, sweeping headlamps, and more.

2022 Nissan Sentra Compare Sedans & See What the Nissan Sentra 2020 Has to Offer at Edmunds

With no reason to change this sharp-looking sedan, we hope the Sentra 2022 will arrive in the showroom as a built-in model.

Inside, the new generation of Sentra that is more mature and feels more luxurious continues with the carefully swoopy dashboard, circular air vents, touchscreen on the top of the dashboard, clean center stack, and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Buyers can enhance their appearance with the available black and brown color schemes and leather upholstery.

This is one of the sharpest interiors in its segment, even in the lower trim, so we hope the Sentra 2022 remains the same.

The current Sentra is no slouch in technology with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and keyless ignition.

Buyers can upgrade the Sentra with the available 8-inch touchscreen, 7-inch vehicle information display, Bose audio system, and more.

These features and options should remain the same in the Nissan Sentra 2022.

There may be a new color choice or two, but don’t expect the Sentra’s style to change before the mid-decade update; even then, it won’t be broad. ’22 will continue the look that came with a 2020 model year redesign.

Nissan changed its body shape, accentuating the brand identity “V-motion” grille and a floating roof effect at the rear.

This lowers the overall height of the Sentra by 2 inches but expands the car to a significant 2.2 inches. It lengthens the body by half an inch and maintains one of the longest wheelbases in its segment (distance between the front and rear axles).

’22 will retain this enhanced demeanor, but a few sudden sheet metal corners will make it more eye-catching than beautiful.

Visually, 2022 SR should return to being the most distinctive Sentra. It will return with exclusives like a dark chrome grille, LED fog lights, black mirrors, lower body sill extension, rear spoiler, and chrome exhaust tip.

It should also remain the only model available with a black painted roof, a very attractive option when paired with a white or Monarch Orange body color.

Expect the S and SV to retain halogen headlamps. The LED headlights, along with LED daytime running lights, should remain standard on the SR. The size and design of the wheels will also make the difference.

S should be back with 16-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers. The SV should return with standard 16-inch alloys and optional 17-inch alloys. Look for the SR which again has an 18-inch alloy.

2022 Nissan Sentra Featured

We’d like to see Nissan match some of its rivals by adding the comfort of an automatic grip that doesn’t require the driver to maintain brake pedal pressure while stopping.

Don’t expect to introduce electric parking brakes, but embedded navigation is a possibility if automakers define it as a competitive necessity.

However, Sentra 2022 will have to bring back a standard set of creditable features along with only two comprehensive options packages.

Vitally, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 will return to standard on every model, outperforming some competitors that don’t offer a comparable safety suite at entry-level trims.

Nissan Safety Shield 360 consists of autonomous emergency braking designed to stop the Sentra automatically to reduce frontal collisions with other vehicles, objects, or pedestrians.

It also includes blind-spot and rear traffic detection with rear autonomous braking (also rare as standard in this class). A spotlight that automatically dims for incoming traffic is also included.

However, some competitors come standard with adaptive cruise control, which can keep a certain distance from the traffic ahead. For the ’22 model year, this driver assistance will likely remain exclusive to the Sentra SV and SR, as standard.

Expect the SR to come back with Nissan monitors nearby, which project a wide video display on the dashboard screen to help maneuver in tight spaces.

All 2022 Sentras will return with Nissan Easy Fill Tire Alerts as standard. This helps to honk the horn when you have inflated the tires to proper inflation.

In addition to the standard features previously mentioned, expect the SV and SR models to return with satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote engine start.

2022 Nissan Sentra Interior

Upscale interior design and decoration must remain a selling point. All models will return to have a stylish flat-bottom steering wheel and round central air vents inspired by the Nissan GT-R supercar (and similar to those in some Mercedes-Benz vehicles).

Contrast stitching on the dashboard and seats is another standard model. The fabric should once again be the standard upholstery across the board, with a gradation from the base fabric to the “sport faux leather” combination on the SR.

Included in the SV Premium Package, the tan leather seats with layered inserts look like they were stolen from luxury brand Infiniti Nissan.

Expect S to retain the 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, the SV, and the 8-inch SR. Both are installed tablet-style and feature physical knobs for main audio functions.

All ’22 Sentras’ will return with Bluetooth streaming audio and phone connections, as well as Siri Eyes Free Voice Recognition.

S must be equipped again with one front USB port with iPod interface and one rear USB port for charging. The SV and SR must add another second Type C front port for charging and data transmission.

Some competitors offer embedded navigation that does not require a cellular signal for real-time GPS mapping. Don’t look for Nissan to provide it at Sentra.

Instead, it should continue to fit all models with the NissanConnect interface with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling app-based navigation with mappings displayed on the dashboard screen.

For the ’21 model year, the SR acquired WiFi hotspot capability, a feature that Nissan could expand to other models for the ’22.

The central dashboard design of the Sentra deserves special attention. The physical controls that add to the screen, stylish ventilation, and climate system with clear markings, and inviting knurled knobs are executed very well.

On the downside, the steering wheel is slightly tilted to the left from the centerline of the driver’s seat. Foot pedals seemed anachronistic in the days of button-operated electric parking brakes. And the touch screen in our SR test was particularly prone to fingerprints and, oddly enough, an unusual degree of blur.

But it will still be an interesting cabin overall. The material is solid and nearly everything you touch regularly is coated or polished. Front and back, comfortable, supportive, and spacious seating.

As with any compact car, the rear seats can fit together for three adults, but two people will enjoy ample legroom. If it’s an SV or SR model, they’ll also get a fold-down center armrest with two cupholders.

Door pockets, console bins, and cubes serve as storage bins for useful small items. At 14.3 cubic feet, luggage volume is close to the top of its class and all models feature a 60/40 split / fold rear seatback for extra flexibility.

Load with care or risk of damage from the open swan neck hinge on the trunk lid.

Inside, Sentra has one of the prettier designs in this segment. Drivers face a set of simple analog gauges that sandwich the 7.0-inch screen on all but the base model.

The center of the dashboard features a trio of circular air vents on top of rugged climate control.

The interior material is a mixture of soft and hard plastic, but the former covers the counting surface and helps cover the rest. The model equipped with upholstered leather seats looks very luxurious, even though it goes against the flat-bottomed sports car steering wheel.

Nissan also pampers the front passengers with extra comfortable Zero Gravity seats that are spacious, flexible, and supportive.

Opt for the available sunroof pieces to the headroom of the cabin but otherwise, adults have sufficient space at the front and rear.

A touch screen appears from the center of each Sentra’s dashboard, and it is equipped with a physical volume and tuning knob. While the base model features a 7.0-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the rest has an 8.0-inch unit and USB on the front and rear seats.

The latter system is also compatible with better options such as SiriusXM satellite radio, eight-speaker Bose stereo, and Wi-Fi hotspot.

2022 Nissan Sentra Turbo

The company also has not confirmed whether the turbo engine will return. The 1.6 liter unit with 188 hp is one of the most popular versions ever. A 1.8-liter engine replacement makes sense.

However, we will see what happens to Sentra Turbo. Experts believe it will arrive for 2022 Ven. In addition to the extra power, the 1.6-liter engine can also produce 177 pound-feet of rotation. Mileage drops to 30 miles, but that’s still a good level for a turbo engine. However, there is still room for improvement.

2022 Nissan Sentra Engine

Every 2021 the Sentra is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 149 hp which is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive.

While the automatic gearless simulates traditional gearchanges, that doesn’t change the fact that the Sentra we tested was noisy and slow, especially when trying to pass at highway speeds.

Not much entertainment behind the wheel either. Steering effort is heavy and predictable, but totally uncommunicative in rivals like the Civic and Mazda 3.

Nissan has independent rear suspension, and wheel sizes that range from 16 to 18 inches.

The version we drive uses the largest set, which contributes to solid ride quality and excessive road noise.

However, Sentra is comfortable and suitable for day trips and weekend trips. We are very impressed with the braking system. I

t delivers a convincing pedal feel and solid braking power of 70 mph, stopping at a competitive 170 feet in its class.

The 2022 Nissan Sentra currently comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that pushes 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque through a continuously variable transmission and out to the front wheels.

Unlike the previous generation, there is no turbo option, although, in the end, we got to see it. We hope this powertrain remains the same at Sentra 2022.

The current center is the IIHS Top Safety Pick thanks to a “Good” score in all crash tests, optional headlamps with an “Acceptable” rating, and a “Superior” multilevel standard automatic emergency braking system.

Other standard safety equipment at Sentra currently includes automatic high beam and blind-spot monitors.

Buyers can also add optional adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera. These security ratings and features are likely to remain the same at Sentra 2022.

Very unlikely, especially since Nissan is using a formula that can serve Sentra’s audience quite well.

Of course, the option for more power will be accepted. But most Sentra drivers will never want a faster acceleration. And all should appreciate the excellent ride and handling of this compact sedan.

2022 Nissan Sentra Specs

Expect the Sentra 2022’s single-engine to remain a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.

(Think of torque as the power that drives a vehicle, horsepower as the energy that keeps it moving.)

While the top competitors offer turbocharged four with more horsepower and torque, the Sentra’s output is on par with most of the rival base engines.

More and more automakers are also turning to continuously variable transmissions, or CVTs, for small cars and their crossovers.

The CVT performs the task of conventional automatic transmission but without stepped gear ratios. Nissan has been using the CVT for longer than most and that will be the only ’22 Sentra transmission performing better than most.

It works seamlessly with the engine to extract the maximum power available in different types of rides.

They work together for good acceleration around the city and enough excitement for drama-free highway incorporation.

Shifting the floor derailleur from “D” to “L” mode maintains higher engine rpm, sharpening throttle response for greater freedom to pass or slip through traffic gaps.

The transmission also appears to minimize unpleasant hum as the engine speed is traveling faster than the vehicle speed, which is common with CVTs during full-throttle acceleration.

However, at 8 seconds 0-60 mph, the Sentra fell behind the turbocharged competition by one second.

You will rarely see a deficit in day-to-day driving. But if you try to maintain an aggressive pace, you’ll lose the Sentra’s inability to match that reservoir of turbo power and torque from mid-to high-speed.

2022 Nissan Sentra MPG

The EPA estimates 2021 Sentra will produce up to 29 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. That figure drops to 28 mpg city and 37 roadways in the sporty SR trim.

Even so, Nissan is just as efficient as some of its competitors who are also powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a CVT, but the Toyota Corolla tops out with 31 mpg city and 40 roadways.

The Sentra SR we run on our 75 mph highway fuel-efficient route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, matches the government’s highway rating at 37 mpg. However, the Corolla XSE sedan that we tested produced 41 mpg.

2022 Nissan Sentra Price and Release Date

They will probably go up a little bit but again will bring down the base price of the main rivals by as much as $ 1,000.

That’s important in this price-sensitive segment. The estimated base price here includes the cost of the Nissan designation, which is $ 925 at ’21 Sentra.

  • Expect the 2022 Nissan Sentra S to be around $ 20,550. The base price estimates for the ’22 Sentra SV are $ 21,600 and for SR, $ 22,900.

Nissan should again concentrate on the Sentra 2022 factory options in two packages that are unlikely to change content or price much.

Both again will contain the desired increase but are a big boost to the purchase price of Sentra.

The SV Premium package ($ 2,270 for the 2021 model year) should once again include the aforementioned 17-inch alloy wheels and upholstered leather upholstery.

It should also include a power tilt/slide moonroof, a power driver seat with power lumbar, heated front seats, and a leather shift knob.

  • The SR Premium package (also $ 2,270 for ’21) will again include the contents of the SV package plus the aforementioned upholstery / faux leather, LED headlamps and daytime running lights, and a bird’s-eye monitor.

Also to be returned in the package is a heated steering wheel, Bose-branded audio enhancements, auto-dimming mirrors, and a sun visor with illuminated vanity.

  • An SR black roof should fetch $ 250 or $ 595, depending on the body color it is paired with. Finally, black instead of polished 18-inch alloy again should be the $ 690 SR option.

22 Sentra is unlikely to change enough to wait, and it will almost certainly cost more. One of the reasons for the wait, however, is to clash with a completely redesigned version of the segment’s best car: the long-awaited ’22 Honda Civic.

Look for the Sentra 2022 to repeat the 2021 model lineup: the base S, the better equipped SV, and the sporty SR.

All will return with 149 horsepower and a commendable set of standard safety features. The SV should be back available with a premium upholstery worthy of a car, the SR with a trendy two-tone paint scheme.

There is little indication Nissan is planning a high-performance edition of the Sentra to compete with the Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N Line, Kia Forte GT, Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo, and the Jetta GLI.

All of them have more than 200 horsepower. And Mazda – like the Subaru Impreza – comes with all-wheel drive.

No hybrid in Sentra’s future matches the Elantra Hybrid, Honda Insight, or the Hyundai Ioniq.

And the Civic, Impreza and Mazda 3 will continue to be the only competitors offering sedan and hatchback body styles.

Nissan has yet to announce an official sale date for Sentra 2022, but we expect to see it in the fall of 2021 based on the previous release date.

Pricing is also unconfirmed, but without a change in workmanship, the Nissan Sentra 2022 should stay close to the current $ 20,335 to $ 22,675 MSRP (including destination cost) model.

2022 Nissan Sentra Consumer Reviews

The redesigned center is a complete transformation. It gives off a grim look and overall mediocre handling to make it one of the best sedans in its class. The engine and transmission are a nice combination that provides discreet acceleration.

The most advanced rear suspension provides a comfortable ride and agile handling. The interior looks luxurious, especially on the SR and SV models; shoppers can even get electric chairs, leather upholstery, and heated chairs.

The rear seats are relatively roomy and the infotainment system is easy to use. All models have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities. Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.

  • BASIC RANGE OF MSRP $ 19,410 – $ 21,750
  • Destination Cost: $ 950
