But vehicles like the 2022 GMC Yukon prove that the modern big SUV doesn’t need the kind of compromises its predecessors demanded.

There are inherent downsides to driving a large utility vehicle, but the GMC Yukon 2022 proves that many of the SUV’s body-on-frame bad habits can be negated by clever design and attention to detail.

2022 GMC Yukon Peview

The GMC Yukon will roll into the unchanged 2022 model year, but that doesn’t mean the big SUVs are getting softer. The Yukon is receiving a top-down redesign for 2021 with an emphasis on interior space and technology.

Compared to the previous generation, the current Yukon is significantly more people and cargo friendly, and a leap forward in safety and infotainment features.

Last year’s switch to independent rear suspension resulted in a 41 percent increase in third-row legroom and 30 percent more cargo space. The Yukon can easily accommodate up to eight passengers, plus 25.5 cubic feet of goods.

By folding the second and third rows, the balloon capacity becomes 122.9 cubic feet. The Yukon XL at its extended length offers 41.1 cubic feet with a full crew on board, and a really large 144.7 cubic feet with a down row.

Each Yukon comes with a 10.2-inch floating touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, seven USB ports, a nine-speaker Bose sound system, wireless device charging, and wireless Apply CarPlay and Android Auto. All models can be equipped with a dual screen rear media system.

The standard interior features leather seats and heated front seats. The mid-range SLT is available with second and third row folding power, adjustable driver memory, heated steering wheel that can be adjusted power, and panoramic sunroof. Four-wheel drive is available with any engine, and comes standard on the off-road oriented AT4 models. Properly equipped, the Yukon can pull in up to 8,400 pounds.

The Yukon continues to offer comprehensive driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, lane guard assistance, blind spot monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors.

Denali goes one step further with a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and a 15-inch head-up display. Available on all models is a trailering camera system with nine different views.

The 2022 GMC Yukon is likely to be launched Tuesday in Vail, Colorado, the biggest change for a family-size SUV in more than a decade. Redesigned from the beginning until 2022, the new Yukon borrowed mechanics from Chevy Tahoe and Suburban but proceeded in its own way with a unique appearance and several new features.

That’s right, crossover SUVs like the Volkswagen Atlas or Kia Telluride are more comfortable and fuel efficient. But if you need to carry up to nine people and gear, or tow a heavy trailer, the GMC Yukon XL 2021 looks like a viable option.

2022 GMC Yukon Interior

The interior is available in a variety of flavors – from the base SLE spec to the luxurious Denali – Yukon and Yukon XL long-wheel promise seats for up to eight passengers, although ordering a popular second-row captain’s seat will reduce the total seating capacity to seven.

All Yukon models come with a large infotainment screen with GMC’s newest IntelliLink interface. We have found a system that is easy to use on other models but have not tested it in the new Yukon.

The SLE, SLT, and AT4 models feature a display that stands tall in the center of the dashboard, but Denali is surrounded by bright chrome and embedded in the dashboard for a more sophisticated look.

Apple CarPlay / Android Automatic Integration and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot will all be standard equipment; Bose navigation and audio systems will be optional features.

2022 GMC Yukon Exterior

On the outside, Denali adds LED headlamps and LED taillights and a large, wide, upright chrome grille such as a four-finger ring and gold teeth.

This middle-class model is equipped with features that are sought after by most buyers, including leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels, a rear power liftgate, and a series of driver assistance features.

Prices for the new, off-road-focused Yukon AT4 start at $ 66,095. Available exclusively with 4WD, the larger Yukon gets 20-inch all-terrain tires, two-speed case transfers, unique interior appointments, and two additional inches of maximum ground clearance with available air suspension.
