The competition in the field is fierce, however, with rivals like the Ford Fusion hybrid, the Kia Optima hybrid and the new Toyota Camry hybrid and Honda Accord hybrid all competing for a piece of the eco-friendly cake. If the Malibu hybrid wasn’t on your shopping list the last time you looked for a midsize sedan, we think it should definitely be now, especially for those interested in maximizing the fuel economy and minimizing its carbon footprint.

What’s new for 2018?
For 2018, the Malibu hybrid remains largely unchanged.

Fuel economy
The Malibu Hybrid offers a powertrain: a 122 1.8-liter hybrid 4-cylinder horsepower, which is coupled to the front wheel drive and a continuously variable fuel-saving automatic transmission. Gas mileage is rated at 49 miles per gallon in the city and 43 mpg on the highway, which places the Malibu hybrid near the top of the hybrid sedan’s mid-size segment.

Standard Features and options
The Malibu Hybrid ($28,750) is offered in a single level of trimming. It comes standard with dual zone automatic climate control, a back-up camera, a 6-link radio speaker with a 7-in touchscreen, Apple display and auto-Android, satellite radio, Bluetooth and OnStar with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Also the standard is 17-in alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated mirrors, a power driver seat, steering wheel audio controls, keyless access and start and 10 airbags.

Options include a remote starter, an 8-in touch screen, a wireless device charging system, advance-collision alarm, rear cross traffic alarm, Lane-keeping support, a blind spot monitoring system, braking Low speed automatic, front and rear park support, automatic high beams, a solar power ceiling, a navigation system, heated front leather seats, a power passenger seat and a Bose sound system of 9 speakers.

Security
In the collision tests carried out by the National Road Traffic Safety Administration, the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu won a perfect 5 star rating in general. The sedan also won the coveted superior security selection designation of the non-profit Insurance Institute for road Safety.

While the Malibu Hybrid offers only basic safety features such as standard equipment-including side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and a backup camera-optional safety items abound. The Malibu hybrid features collision-to-bow warning with low speed automatic braking, a blind spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear park support, lane maintenance assistance and High Beam automatic.

Behind the wheel
The Malibu hybrid cabin is comfortable, spacious and quiet (although the concrete surfaces bring a roar of the road). The quality of the ride is serene and disheveled, and the power delivery is responsive and capable. This car is not a high performance Freeway blaster, but it takes a lot of the slave and quite a bit of travel expenses. The only small complaint is that some of the cabin materials show signs of cost reduction.

What we Like
Strong fuel economy; Competitive interior design and materials; Beautiful sheet metal; Good price for the team

What I don’t
More hybrid clipping levels would be nice; The trunk space surprisingly reduced due to hybrid batteries

How much?
$28,750-$35000

Regenerative brakes on hybrids and electric cars tend to have a tendency to feel strange, but these have what Chevrolet calls combined action. They feel almost identical to the brakes of a normal car, although they still gather energy that would otherwise have dissipated.

The trunk space is slightly shortened by having to accommodate the hybrid system’s battery pack. While a regular sedan can withstand up to 15.8 cubic feet, this variant offers 11.8 cubic feet. Although this is not exactly a deal of rupture, the extra hassle is that this battery pack is still on the way even with the folded back seats.
